Pride in Our People
See how our colleagues make a difference
Truly Sparkling Unit
The Transitional Skilled Unit’s (TSU) Reward and Recognition Committee created its own “Truly Sparkling Unit” awards to celebrate everyone’s efforts. Staff members nominated their colleagues for the 27 fun awards, which include “Study Buddy” (Deborah Moran, R.N.), “Keeping It Clean” (Cecelia Arevalo, housekeeping), and MVP (Barbara Smith, administrative partner). Committee members include (left to right): Becky Willis, Heather Koch, Christina Reighn, Gloria Wagner, R.N., Cyndi Keiper, Carol Trumbauer, R.N., and Barbara Smith.
A Transplant Milestone
Judy Bairstow of East Greenville (center) is the 400th person to receive a kidney transplant at LVHHN. Her physicians, transplantation services chief Michael Moritz, M.D. (left), and colleague Pradip Chakrabarti, M.D., performed her transplant in December 2005. Due to advances in laparoscopic surgery and anti-rejection medications, they also are able to perform more living-donor transplants. This enables more spouses, family members and friends to donate kidneys to their loved ones. The Transplant Center of the Lehigh Valley is celebrating 15 years of service this month.
Endorsing the Future of Nursing
Pediatric intensive care nurses Angela Shutter, R.N. (left), and Theresa Netzel, R.N., recently signed “The Declaration of Professional Nursing Practice.” The document, which includes 29 vision statements regarding family presence, nurse-to-patient ratios, technology and more, sets goals for nursing through 2015. During Nurses Week, nursing staffs on each patient care services unit signed their own framed copy, which hangs on each unit for all to see.
In Katrina’s Wake
Technical partner Stephanie Bednarz, 7B, traveled to New Orleans in March to help repair the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina. “The destruction is still indescribable,” she says. “The force of the water ripped homes from their foundations and piled them on top of each other.” During her 10-day trip, Bednarz helped remove debris, ceilings and floors from flooded homes. To see more pictures from her trip, call 610-402-CARE.
The People’s Choice
Readers of
El Torero, a Lehigh Valley Spanish newspaper, have voted LVHHN their favorite in the category of hospital and clinics. Publisher Ricardo Montero (left) recently presented the People’s Choice award to Jim Geiger, vice president of ambulatory services, LVH–17th and Chew. Geiger is helping implement programs aimed at reducing barriers to care (such as language differences) that may prevent people from receiving quality health care. These include growing our interpreter services program, recruiting bilingual and bicultural employees, and developing plans to provide additional health care services to families in center-city Allentown.
Thumbs Up for LVH–Muhlenberg ED
Emergency department colleagues at LVH–Muhlenberg are celebrating their Press Ganey scores. They are the first emergency department at LVHHN to join the 90s Club with a score of 90.3 in nursing for the third quarter. “It’s a wonderful achievement,” says director Charlotte Buckenmyer, R.N., “especially with a large increase in patients since the new hospital opened last year.”
